Squid Game Creator Announces 2nd Season

K-Dramas and other Korean content have gained a massive following in Western media in recent years. If you’re looking for a new show to watch, Netflix has an abundance of K-dramas worth the watch, one of those just so happens to be Squid Game.

Squid Game is a Netflix Original K-drama about a group of people severely in debt playing deadly children’s games for a big prize. The show first dropped in September of 2021 and skyrocketed to the top of Netflix’s charts, becoming Netflix’s most-watched Netflix Original.

After the show’s nine-episode run, audiences were left wanting more. Typically, K-dramas are only one season, varying in episode and time length, having an entire, completed storyline within that season. Usually, they only get a second season if they reach incredibly high popularity, like Squid Game.

Here’s what we know about the new season so far. Creator of the show Hwang Dong-hyuk was reluctant to create a season two, but in an interview with Associated Press, he said, “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season.” He went on to say, “I almost feel like you leave us no choice. But I will say there will indeed be a second season.”

Hwang didn’t say anything concrete about the now confirmed season two, only saying that he has the idea in his head and it’s still firmly in the planning process.

There are many theories as to what will happen in this new season of the show. I believe that Hwang Jun-Ho, who supposedly died in season one, is alive and will go back to the police and try to convince them of what he investigated. Furthermore, the main character, Gi-Hun, will be back and trying to infiltrate the games. I’m hoping that at some point, Jun-ho and Gi-hun will cross paths and end up working together. Il-nam, who we found out to be the creator of the games at the end of season one, will hopefully be back, and we will get more backstory on the games and it’s creation.

Students at Ferguson were asked about their predictions on what will happen in season two of Squid Game. Freshman Vanessa Pelayo said, “[she] thinks Player 67 (Kang Sae-byeok) and Player 199 (Ali Abdul) are still alive.” Both of those characters are fan-favorites of the show, and there is a lot of discourse on whether or not these characters are actually alive.

When asked about his predictions junior, Samuel Carbonell said, “My predictions for season two is I think Gi-hun is obviously gonna enter a second game, but I feel like there are some characters who ‘died’ in the show that are gonna come back… I’m thinking really about the cop (Jun-Ho) who got shot off the cliff. I think there might be an instance of some characters coming back and just reappearing.”

“My prediction for season two is that the main character who survived the first game (Gi-hun) goes back, tries to investigate the games, and he teams up with the detective from season one (Jun-ho) who was already inside the game investigating, and all of this will happen while a new cast of characters are undergoing a new squid game, more messed up games based on children’s games,” junior, Victor Pazos stated when asked about his predictions for the new season.

The consensus on season one is that the show is well done, Carbonell saying, “Season one of Squid Game has provided a great base of a t.v. show if there is going to be a season two, and even if there is not gonna be a  season two, I think the show is actually really well done and well produced.” Pelayo also gave her thoughts on season one, saying she thinks, “Squid Game season one was amazing and extremely well written, especially because the characters fit so perfectly into the plot.”

Squid Game is an overall great show, and if you haven’t seen it and are looking for something new to watch, you should add it to your list and many people, including myself, are excited to see what’s to come in season two.
