The Wednesday Trailer Review

The Addam Family makes an exciting comeback in the new Netflix series Wednesday, based on Wednesday Addam. As per reports, the show is announced to be released this Fall, but a specific date has not been announced. Despite its ambiguous release date, Netflix’s teaser trailer received six million views in just over three days.

The series is a gothic-like comic adventure directed by Tim Burton, written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, and executively produced by Burton, Gough, and Millar. It is the seventh adaptation in The Addams Family franchise, with the original being released in 1964.

Regardless of the series being part of the franchise, Burton wanted to make sure that the new iteration would not be mistaken for a reboot, but instead a coming-of-age spinoff that focuses on Wednesday’s life as she grows into adulthood.

Burton was one of the first filmmakers tapped by producers to collaborate with The Addams Family in 1991. He had previously worked with its two screenwriters Caroline Thompson and Larry Wilson on Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Beetlejuice

The star-studded cast has also been revealed — consisting of Catherine Zeta-Jones as the matriarch Morticia, Luis Guzmán as householder Gomez, Isaac Ordonez as luckless brother Pugsley, and finally, Jenna Ortega as misunderstood, soulless Wednesday.

Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in the ’90s film, stars in the new series as a new character, but her role remains a mystery and is being kept under wraps.

Audiences are commenting on Ortega’s drastic change from Disney to mature roles. But Burton says, “it was a natural choice to cast her in the dark comedy about the mayhem and murder-loving minor.” Ortega is made for it; she’s doing an amazing job and fits right in.

Netflix hasn’t shared much about Wednesday’s plot details; interesting how everything is so clandestine. However, we do know that the series will be eight episodes in which Wednesday attends Nevermore Academy as a student and as she attempts to master her psychic ability. Along the way, she will also have to deal with a great number of challenges in preventing a horrendous killing spree that has terrorized the local town.

Long time followers of the franchise are absolutely stoked and eagerly awaiting Wednesday’s premiere to release! This show will also undoubtedly attract a new wave of fandom and potentially reinvent its legacy. We truly cannot wait for what’s to come.
