Donations for Puerto Rico

Hurricane Maria made landfall on Puerto Rico as a nearly Category 5 hurricane on September 20th, hitting the island directly. Once the sky had cleared, the results were devastating. People were left without electricity, clean water, and supplies. In many cases, people also lost their homes and anyway to contact their loved ones.

Streets were turned into rivers, homes were simply debris, and lives were lost in the aftermath. The people of Puerto Rico are left in need of help and supplies.

Science Teacher Edda Rivera decided to make donating supplies for Puerto Ricans easier for the students of Ferguson. Since September 25th, Rivera has been working with Florida Baby Food Center to collect things such as first aid kits, clothes for babies, baby supplies, water, and non-perishable food for Puerto Rico.

“We are going to have a container, fill up the entire container, and send it there. First Aid things will be sent by plane. We have a private charter that is going to be hired,” Rivera said.

Rivera’s inspiration for getting so involved in donations was her own family in Puerto Rico who went through the storm.

“I’m Puerto Rican, all of my family is there. They went through all of it,” Rivera said.

Donations will be taken until October 31st. They will accept anything from batteries to dry pet food. All donations will be taken in the activities office (room 50) or Rivera’s classroom (Room 337). The donations will certainly go to a good cause and maybe even save lives of people who are truly suffering right now.
