Aestheticism: More Than Just a Trend
Aestheticism has become a big part of youth culture today. In short, an aesthetic is a specific style or mood that includes interests, colors, music, and fashion. A lot of teenagers use aesthetics to connect with similar people and express themselves. Apps like Pinterest and Instagram make this easy by letting people share outfits, ideas, and moods.
Instead of being time wasters, these apps can be fun and creative places where teens explore style. Apps like Pinterest and Instagram make this easy by letting people share outfits, ideas, and moods. Instead of being time wasters, these apps can be fun and creative places where teens explore style.
One admirable thing about aestheticism is how it brings young people together. When people have similar styles or tastes, it helps them feel like they belong. This is not new because past decades have experienced the same thing. The early 1980s were marked by vivid colors and bold styles, and the 1970s had disco and laid-back fashion. Because so many people wore similar outfits during that time, fashion helped bring society together.
However, aestheticism also has disadvantages. People may feel pressured to follow a particular style, which sometimes limits creativity. If you do not read certain books, watch certain shows, or dress in certain ways, you might think that your sense of style is not great. Because of this, teens who genuinely enjoy something might start to worry about appearing basic or too unique. Instead of choosing what they like, they might follow trends to fit in. Instead of making their own decisions, a lot of people wait for internet trends to tell them what looks good.
Aesthetics can be fun and motivating, but it should not control a person’s personality or style. Aestheticism has had a big impact on the youth for decades, but has recently been pronounced through social media. It can engage a wide variety of people with one another and embellish your own tastes and styles. Aesthetics should be explored as long as who you are remains.
