The Epic Tale of the Minecraft Movie
The Minecraft Movie made its official debut on April 4th, 2025, and exploded with an overwhelming amount of fanfare.
Starring Jack Black as the standard Mojang character, Steve, the audience follows him as he desperately tries to escape the geometrical marvel of a world he has been imprisoned in for decades.
He is accompanied by an unfortunately forgettable cast: Henry, a young science nerd; Natalie, his older sister; Garret the Garbage Man, a vintage store owner; and Dawn, an overly enthusiastic mobile zoo owner. Together, they connect the importance of art to their own mundane lives and learn to appreciate being themselves.
For a kids’ movie, it is entertaining. There are quick quips and light-hearted themes that teens and older movie-goers alike can enjoy, and the plot is interesting enough to retain your attention throughout its ninety-minute duration.
Watching the movie in a full theater is quite the experience. Common etiquette is discarded, people toss drinks and popcorn buckets in exaggerated gestures of enjoyment. Every moment where Steve names an item or breaks into song is followed by loud cheers that go against every AMC policy preview.
Also, the treatment of the female characters, Natalie and Dawn, is embarrassing for a film expressing the value of human art and attention. Their screen time of five minutes does little to develop them in any meaningful way.
Above all, the movie is performing exceptionally. It is encouraged that you watch it for yourself and experience the world of mining and crafting.
