Why Winning An EGOT Is Such An Honor
Now that awards season has closed, we have the chance to look back at
previous years’ editions and discuss the honored winners. Celebrities can win
recognitions for different fields in the arts: for example, the Grammys highlight the best
in music, the Oscars celebrate movies, the Emmys celebrate TV shows, and the Tonys
are for theater. Winning even just one of these awards at the prestigious ceremonies is
already a massive achievement, but some performers with rare talent can obtain all four.
Only twenty-seven people have done this, who are known as EGOT (Emmy, Grammy,
Oscar, Tony) winners.
The first ever EGOT winner was Richard Rodgers, who completed the four
awards in 1962 after having composed songs for different mediums since receiving his
first Oscar in 1946. Some other notable winners include Audrey Hepburn, who
completed her four EGOT awards in 1955, Rita Moreno, who completed hers in 1977,
and Whoopi Goldberg, who completed hers in 2002 and became the first black woman
to accomplish this impressive feat.
Recently, Steven Spielberg became an EGOT winner by winning his first
Grammy at the 2026 ceremony for producing Music by John Williams. Actress Cynthia
Erivo is close to accomplishing EGOT status as well, as she has an Emmy, Grammy,
and Tony, and has received Oscar nominations for her starring role in “Wicked”.
It’s incredible that these generational talents have achieved so much. Being
recognized through the years pushes actors and singers to reach their highest potential,
and produce art to be enjoyed by us all.
