With IB and AP testing right around the corner, students at John A. Ferguson are preparing themselves to take the tests they’ve been studying towards all school year.  These AP and IB courses are designed to challenge students and educate them at a college level. During the month of April and May students take their AP and IB tests which will determine their future. There are many strategies that will help you pass major exams including knowing the material, time management, and double checking your work.

In preparation for the AP and IB tests, you should study past years’ exams and read prep books to guide you. All AP classes have prep books that can be purchased online. The books come equipped with important information about the exam and practice tests that you can take to be prepared. For the IB test, you can prepare yourself by taking past years’ tests and sample tests found on the International Baccalaureate website.

In the days prior to the exams, remember to keep your body healthy and relaxed by getting sufficient sleep, drinking a lot of water, and eating well. The day of the test bring water and a snack with you to eat during the break, this helps to keep your body hydrated and full of energy which can help you perform better. “During the AP World History Exam last year I brought almonds to keep me energized since I got hungry being there for three hours,” stated sophomore Phoebe Careaga.

The most important strategy towards passing your AP or IB exam is managing your time efficiently. This can be done if you bring a silent watch to keep track of how much time you have left, and by having time targets in mind per sections of the exam.

While taking the test don’t get stuck on one question for too long because time is valuable on these rigorous tests, instead skip the hard questions that you might not know the answers of right away and do the simpler ones first. Some exams might have a multiple-choice section, and if you come across a question you don’t know the answer to, it’s in your favor to guess rather than leaving it blank.

When you’re done with the exam look at how much time you have left and use it to your advantage. Use the extra time to reread your responses and correct any spelling or grammatical errors that you have made.

By following these tips and knowing the material on the exams, the IB and AP tests should be no trouble for any student at John A. Ferguson Senior High to overcome.
