“Ferguson’s Dance Playlist” was a production that was one to remember. It reflected the dancers’ talent and the union between the collaboration of performers, choreographers, filmmakers, and technical staff. This concert exceeded expectations and captured the hearts of the audience.
The night started with an opening speech commemorating the production and hard work that took place for this concert. The director showcased their admiration for the staff who poured their hearts and souls into their work and for the administrators who allowed this production to happen.
This concert had diverse music for everyone’s taste, from lyrical to hip hop to musical theater. Every act was planned to illustrate their capability and to illustrate their skills. “The show was amazing, it was so cool to see my film on screen and see our dancers dancing their hearts out. They are such great dancers, they have a passion and skill for what they do.”-Melany Fortuna spoke admiringly and respectfully of the dancers’ talents and recognized the efforts they put into making these performances.
One piece that caught the eyes of the audience, which was during the first half of the show, was “Yellow Brick Road.” It was a fun and energetic choreography number made by Sabrina Gonzalez and other cast members. The dance was lively, embracing the playfulness of the tune. It was danced with so much life that you could tell that everyone in the choreography had fun being in it.
Switching from a happy act, “Sleep to Dream,” was up next. It was choreographed by Lissette Dube and danced by Chantel Cardo. This act captivated the crowd with its emotional energy, drawing the audience into its heart-wrenching tale. The dancer’s movements and facial expressions spoke volumes about the amount of time and effort they invested in the act.
Not only do the performers deserve recognition, but so do the directors (Misa Correa, Kaitlyn Torres, and Javier Salinas). They brought each set to life with beautiful imagery, enhancing each dance and song for the performance.
Another energetic song other than “Yellow Brick Road” was “Divas.” It was choreographed by Mia Fable and Sabrina Pena. Both were strong and assertive of what they were looking for in the performance to capture Beyoncé’s bold energy. The dancers executed quick-fire steps, pushing past their usual choreographies.
The audience was bursting with energy from the beginning to the end of the performance. They applauded and yelled out, encouraging the dancers, showcasing their excitement and love for queen bee Beyoncé.
“Heart of Glass” was choreographed by Shana Wexler. The dancers entranced the audience with their elegant movements, their bodies showcasing the loss and longing the song evokes. This gave dancers the chance to show their range of styles and abilities, to showcase emotion and pain. “Seeing this dance felt like looking at a painting, you could feel all the emotion and feelings that the song evoked, it felt very magical watching it on stage,” Laila Torres commented on how these dancers powerfully showcased their talent.
The most memorable part of the evening for the senior fusion dancer was when the curtains closed on the final number. Waves of emotions swept over them as they came to realize that this concert was officially their last one. They burst into tears and hugs, reminiscing on all the trials and struggles they had with each other, yet overcoming it with the love they have with one another. “When the curtains went down, the senior fusion dancers started crying and were happy, and hugged each other. It was sad and happy as they realized that that was the last time they would dance with each other. Even old fusion dancers came to watch.” Amy Merchan witnessed the love these seniors have for one another.
Overall, Ferguson’s Dance Playlist was a display of talented members who were committed to showing their passion and love for either dancing or behind-the-scenes work. Every aspect of the show demonstrated how much heart and effort they put into the concert. As the curtain fell, the audience applauded, paying tribute to an evening of dance that was not to be ignored.
