School IDs Are Now Part of the Dress Code
John A. Ferguson Sr High has implemented a mandatory ID into the dress code as an instrument meant to increase the safety of all students and staff.
In previous years, IDs were encouraged to be worn but not enforced. However, in the 2022-2023 school year it will now be enforced similar to any other part of the uniform.
IDs are vital for ensuring safety as they contain school-relevant information needed to identify if an individual belongs on campus.
“School-issued ID badges are considered a security best practice. When ID badges are required and worn by all it is easy to identify students with a single glance and also helps security personnel to identify unauthorized visitors,” stated Principal Mrs. Wendy Barnett.
Moreover, school IDs now carry value in a variety of spots on campus for students.
“IDs have the potential to serve as an entry card to allow students and staff to gain access to various parts of our campus. Additionally, our ID cards can be used to store important student data such as emergency contact information, medication and allergies as well as track class attendance and participation in extra-curricular activities.” Principal Barnett continued.
Should a student be found not wearing their IDs, they will receive a detention. However, in the case that an ID is lost, students are welcome to go to the media center in order to obtain another copy.
IDs are now to be used for receiving free school lunches as well. As in the lunch line, students will be required to scan their cards before being given their food.
The IDs may seem like they have minimal impact on school safety at first glance. However, this is a step in the right direction in terms of protecting those on campus at all times, as well as from any potential threat to the school from entering. It is imperative that students wear them in order to help keep our halls safe for the new school year and many more to come
