Different Ways We Communicate
The range of communication methods has expanded as technology has advanced. This variety broadens the demographics of those who will communicate using technology. Each method is unique, with advantages and disadvantages that allow each to be chosen based on the user’s preferences.
“I call people more than anything else because I can express myself better since I’m a dry texter,” explained Maria Pessagno, a 12th grader. Texting has become more popular, but it is not always comfortable for people. Some people have a bright and outgoing personality, but it doesn’t always translate well in writing. Many people, including this student, struggle to convey tone and avoid being misunderstood through text. Calling perfectly counters this by allowing the person on the other end to hear your true tone and naturally express your humor.
Victoria Haber, a 12th grader, says, “I enjoy texting because it allows me to communicate with people anywhere and at any time, whereas a phone call requires availability.” This is a common thought, given that texting is the more popular option. Many people have a way of expressing their personality through text, while others shine brighter than in person. Texting can provide some level of privacy over your true emotions. Others choose it simply because it is convenient. In contrast to a phone call, you can respond to a text message at any time, even hours later.
Another 12th grader, Sebastian Canales, says, “I prefer DMing people because it allows me to catch up with more friends by responding to stories and posts.” Texting someone out of the blue would feel more random than a direct message.” This explains another aspect of the convenience mentioned previously. Many people avoid texting or calling because they don’t know what to say. However, with social media and users posting about their lives or beliefs, it is simple to start conversations in that manner.
There are numerous ways to communicate, and none is superior to the other. It all depends on your preferences. These provide more opportunities for people to be comfortable and authentic while communicating with loved ones or acquaintances. The variety encourages people to communicate rather than withhold themselves simply because they do not feel secure or confident in one particular communication option.
