Falcons Take Heartbreaking Loss on Senior Night Against Coral Reef

This past Friday, the Falcons’ boys football team played their Homecoming and Senior Night game against the Barracudas. Despite their hard work and determination, the Falcons narrowly lost with a final score of 31-32.

With a season full of both ups and downs, the Falcons hoped to make a statement against their rivals with a victory. Unfortunately, the team came up short during overtime despite visible efforts to maintain their lead.

“We played as hard as we could and gave 110% effort, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things we can improve on. We have to refine some things and work on better pursuit and not biting on play-action passes,” says Senior Cornerback Rocco Monzon.

At the half, the Falcons managed 2 touchdowns, trailing 14-0. They then managed to get their offense running in the 3rd by scoring two touchdowns, led by Senior Running Back Elias Romero, who played his first full game since missing the past five weeks due to injury. The defense reached its peak in the 4th quarter, sending the game into overtime.

The Falcons got the ball first, and on the first play of overtime, Senior Quarterback Alexander Lamella threw a touchdown pass to Junior Wide Receiver Brandon Tagle. Junior Kicker and Linebacker Hector Hernandez kicked the extra point, and the Falcons went up by 7.

On Reef’s first play, they threw a pass one-on-one in the corner of the end zone, but it was deflected by Monzon. On the next play, the Barracudas threw a touchdown pass, deciding to gamble and go for the win with a two-point conversion. They succeeded, winning the game 32-31.

“Although we played a great game, I think the small mistakes ended up costing us,” states Lamella. “We’re going to get those cleaned up in practice next week, beat Hialeah Gardens, and face Reef again in the championship.”

Even though the Falcons had a tough week, they’ve already solidified their spot in the playoffs. They play the Hialeah Gardens Gladiators in the first round on November 1st, 2024, at Gardens. Go out and support!
