First Day of School
Falcons are back for another school year, soaring to new heights. Senior falcons are more excited than ever beginning their final year at Ferguson, while new falcons are eager to see what this year has in store. Not only do freshmen have a lot to learn, but a whole chapter of their life to adapt to. They have to find where their classes are and learn how to navigate the halls with hundreds of students rushing alongside them.
“Walking in the hallways now is really different from middle school,” Amanda Gonzalez said, “I need to learn how to get to the different buildings and hallways it’s just really confusing.”
It doesn’t take long for the students to get accustomed to finding their way around Ferguson. In a matter of days, students will find the fastest route to their classes. Starting a new school year can be stressful and intimidating. “When I walked through the gates of the school I just felt my heart beat faster,” Melanie Rodriguez shared, “Well I’m a freshman so this is my first time in this school. Being here gives me mixed feelings, some excitement for how this year would go for me, and some nervousness for the new place I’m in, but I feel like everyone gets like that especially freshmen like me!”
Unlike freshmen who are trying to learn to navigate the hallways, sophomores know their way around. A sophomore’s biggest challenge is balancing their school and social lives. “Being a sophomore, to be honest, does not feel that different from being a freshman because just two months ago I was still one” Sabrina Alvarez shared. Just as freshmen do, sophomores have to deal with their emotions. Some will get just as nervous on the first day of school as they did last year. Even though this is a new school year, they may not feel any different. But there are other sophomores on school grounds that disagree. “When I walked in on Monday I felt fine. I was already here one year so it makes no sense for me to be nervous. It’s just another year for me,” stated Carlos Quintana.
On the other hand, the Juniors attending Ferguson have more excitement than unease. Juniors have a lot on their minds already. They are thinking about how to obtain a good SAT/ACT score and what colleges they want to apply to.
“The first day of school is already getting to me. I think about how I will do in my classes this school year and how I can improve myself so I can get into Florida State University… it just feels so pressuring already,” Junior Sylvia Bermudez said.
There are some juniors that think the first day of school was like any other, they don’t feel that nervous and they are just planning on how they can get through the year without any problems. They just want to pass the year so they can get to be Senior.
“This year for me I think would be a good one,” Junior Michaela Perez said, “Yes, I know that I have to study a lot and I plan to but I really don’t want to be stressed already, especially on the first day of school. I just want to talk to my friends and have a nice and calm day. I would think about everything else soon.”
Other juniors have a calm attitude on the first day of school. They know how to get through this year without a problem and are excited to see their friends, but are just as ready to get to studying without a problem.
“I like to be ready for the school year, it feels somewhat different from my freshmen and sophomore year but I really think that this year will go by smoothly. I am not that worried for what is in store for me, I think I can handle it,” Junior Selwyna Gordon said.
Many different grade levels have varied mindsets on the first day of school. Some wonder if they are going to have their friends in the same class. Some wonder if they will make new friends quickly or even make friends at all. Others think about what scholarships they can obtain, but they will get the hang of it eventually. Although it’s the first day of school, many people can tell that this year is going to be a spectacular year.
