Latest School Safety Regulations
Over the years, schools have taken extra precautions regarding student safety, implementing rule after rule to ensure that students are protected in their learning environment. Students sometimes do not understand the purpose of the educational system’s constant rule-making. Still, it is to protect them and ensure they feel comfortable in a place where they spend about seven hours a day.
A recently adopted rule mandates that educators keep their classroom doors closed at all times. Numerous instructors in the past left their doors open, which sometimes led to catastrophic occurrences. Locking the doors may seem like an annoyance, but it ensures the safety of both students and teachers. “Schools now are making it mandatory to have our classrooms locked at all times during class. It ensures safety when a concerning event happens.” Mrs. Carrasquillo believes secured doors are essential, as they protect both instructors and students in the event of a situation involving gun violence.
Another regulation passed deals with phone usage at school. It prohibits students from having their phones out during class, and if they do, phones must be placed face down to prevent distractions during learning time. “Personally, I think the new phone law will help kids learn better since kids are always tempted to use their phones in class.” Mr. De Jesus strongly believes that phones are a huge distraction in the learning environment since many students use them for non-educational purposes.
“ID’s are very important to wear every day, and neither students nor teachers should neglect wearing them because it’s for our safety,” Ms. Nardoni firmly believes that wearing IDs is crucial, citing past tragic events involving students and gun violence. Schools have mandated the wearing of identification due to unfortunate events, allowing them to identify each student and staff member.
Fire drills are essential for both students and teachers, as there have been tragic instances involving school fires. By practicing fire drill safety, educators and students better understand the routes to take within their schools in case of an actual fire, regardless of its size. This lessens anxiety among students and staff since knowing these routes can provide a calmer and safer way back to safety.
Overall, our educational system passed these regulations not for meaningless purposes, but to protect both instructors and students, and to support students’ learning and development. These guidelines not only safeguard our educational environment but also promote a safer school community.
