Meet Ferguson’s New Horse: Blue

At Ferguson, students have a special chance to get practical experience with animal care through the veterinary program. Our vet program offers lots of interactive experiences with animals, which teaches students the responsibilities and skills they need for this profession. “Through my time in the veterinary program, I have learned about how to care for many different animals. I’ve learned about dogs, cats, goats, and many more. My teacher, Ms. Morgan, has taught me and my peers how to do basic veterinary procedures like giving vaccines and restraining. I’ve learned so much through this class and I’m so happy that I picked it.” (Lene Garlock 12)

One of the animals everyone notices on campus is Blue, who is Ms. Morgan’s horse. Ms. Morgan brought Blue to Ferguson so students would be able to see what is involved in caring for a horse. A group of students helps look after Blue, which gives them firsthand experience with feeding, grooming, and meeting his needs. This group is especially important because Blue is the biggest animal and one of the biggest eye catchers on campus. Because of this, students get the opportunity to work closely with him and make sure he is receiving the best care.

“Blue is one of the nicest horses I’ve been around. He’s 29 years old and is in great shape and has really cool eyes because he has heterochromia he so gentle well trained, and obedient and being around has led me to see how special he is” (Orlando Riopedre 12.) “Blue is an amazing horse he’s one of the best horses i’ve ever worked with. He’s calm, respectful, and listens very well. He was the perfect horse to start our horse team and that was all thanks to Ms. Morgan. With Blue at our school our team is able to learn the responsibilities of taking care of him and over all learning to care for horses in general. Some of the things we do with him is groom him, lunge him for exercise, as well as feed him. There would be no horse team with out Blue and that’s why he has our hearts!” (chloe schrofronick 12)

Blue is not the only animal students interact with. Ferguson’s veterinary program also includes goats, roosters, and cats, so students get to work with different kinds of animals hands on and even foster cats. If you walk behind the school, you might even see Blue eating grass behind the gates. Having Blue on campus gives students an enjoyable and memorable way to learn about animal care outside the classroom.
