Remembering Dolly Parton

On August 25, 2026 country star Dolly Parton passed at 80. Her death was announced by her family online with a brief video highlighting her legacy. From “Jolene” to “I Will Always Love You,” her music is what most will remember her by. But Parton was an activist when it was not glamorous, a philanthropist when it mattered, and a belle of incredible strength and wit.

Growing up in the deep south of Tennessee, Dolly experienced poverty and hence lacked a proper education. Her house was an open space that she shared with all eleven of her siblings and parents. These tough circumstances motivated her to persist and write songs we adore today like “Coat of Many Colors.” 

Her break into musical stardom gave her unimaginable wealth (a real from rags to riches stories). But instead of keeping her riches to herself and sitting comfortably on her millions, Dolly gave back. The Dollywood Foundation was founded to help improve education in her hometown, creating systems and programs that respectively decreased drop-out rates and gifted children free books. Her altruistic attitude was inspired by her humble beginnings, and she saw it was her duty to help those who needed it. 

During a time of high political tension, Dolly was also an advocate for women and civil rights. She spoke for equality between the sexes and races, surprising many that a woman of her upbringing and status would support radical movements commonly opposed in the South. Her political vocality introduced Dolly’s music to diverse audiences, whom remain loyal after her death.

Beneath her big hair and vivacious makeup, was a tender and funny woman whose intelligence was often overlooked. Parton was quick with her remarks, and always defended herself against shallow, misogynistic, and belittling comments made towards her. While talk-show hosts attempted to dim her sparkle, Dolly never cowered. She spoke intelligently of herself and her attributes, shutting down negativity with humor many find admirable.

Dolly Partons’s kindness, generosity, and confidence should stick with us all and encourage us to do better. Voluminous your hair and wear flashy clothes while also caring for your community—it’s what she would have wanted.
