The 2026 Met Gala

Dress up! The Met Gala has returned on the red carpet for the long awaited 2026
event on May 4th. The event takes place on the night of the first Monday of May in which only
invited celebrities and designers work together to craft an outfit based on the year’s
unique theme which was inspired by the annual spring exhibition displayed by the
Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.
In the 2025 Met Gala, the theme and style for the event was titled, “Super Fine:
Tailoring Black Style”, while the dress code was named “Tailored for You”. This year,
the style decided to dress differently, with the new theme being, “Costume Art”, and the
dress code being, “Fashion is Art”.

The long-anticipated affair was created to help fund the Metropolitan Museum of
Art’s Costume Institute in 1948 by Eleanor Lambert, a fashion publicist. Originally, the
event in New York City was a midnight dinner for the high society members in New York
and the prominent members in fashion at the Waldorf Astoria as a fundraiser for the
baby Costume Institute, which was just founded. The night didn’t turn into the high
press, celebrity filled and themed night until 1995 when Vouge Magaznine’s editor in
Cheif Anna Wintour took the jeweled throne of the event and made it into the famous
night we know now.

The 2026 Met Gala had many highlights and yet many controversies. One of the
most prominent moments of the night was when Cher, the iconic singer and actress,
made her famous return after a decade of absence from the acclaimed occasion. She
came on the red carpet donning a structured corset belt, a twisted silk tulle dress, and to
top it off she wore a custom cropped jacket decorated with gleaming crystals.
Although there were many afamed actors and designers at the event, such as
Anna Hathway, Amanda Seyfried, Glenn Martens who designed Rihanna’s dress, and
Oliver Rousting who created Beyonce’s dress, there were many who skipped the event
due to a deep controversy.

The controversy took the form of Jeff Bezos, the founder of
Amazon, and his wife Lauren Sanchez who were co-chairs and the biggest sponsor for
The Costume Institute, donating approximately 10 million dollars to the institute.
Jeff’s involvement caused a huge amount of backlash from members of the Gala
and even the people in New York City. Many celebrities reportedly declined the offer to
attend the event because of him and people protested about Amazon’s supposed
exploitation of its staff. There were even reports of urine bottles placed in the museum
and the Met Gala by activists to protest Bezo’s work practices.
To sum it up, while the Met Gala had its pressing issues, the night was an
unexpected massive success, with the event bringing in 42 million dollars for the Costume Institute and a billion worldwide video views.

Even students at John A. Ferguson High School witnessed the iconic night and had their various comments. Kristin Alemndral, a senior at Ferguson, stated that, “The outfit I really enjoyed
from the Met Gala was Emma Chamberlains because her stunning dress really
captured the essence of the starry night painting.”

Kristin was not the only student who commented on the event. Olivia Oliver, a
junior at Ferguson, expressed her opinion that, “My favorite dress was Gravie Abrams
because I felt that hers resembled the painting that she was referencing the most.”
Clearly, the Met Gala even caught the attention of the students at Ferguson like it
