Golf Season Review

The Ferguson Falcons 2021 golf season has come to a close. The season went very well considering how little players the boys and girls golf teams have.

“This year, because of how last year was with Covid, it was hard to recruit, so we are in a rebuilding year,” said Head Coach Jorge Garcia. 

There was only one returning golfer on the girls team: a junior who has been playing for our team since her freshman year, Nicole Hechevarria. “She is pretty much the mainstay of the program,” stated Garcia 

Nicole really stole the show this season, scoring district runner up, placing third in the Youth Fair, and being a regional qualifier.

“She is a natural golfer. She puts in time on her own; she puts time into the game, into practice. She plays outside of school too: she plays tournaments,” added Garcia. 

However, because this season did take place during a rebuilding year, the coach was not able to build a complete boys or girls team. There were only three golfers playing for Ferguson: Nicole Hechevarria, Anthony Mesa, and Dylan Gerlock. 

Anthony Mesa and Dylan Gerlock both played for the boys team, but they were both beginners with little experience. 

This lack of golfers obviously made it more difficult for the team to do as well as they hoped, but the players still put as much as they could into the tournaments. “It was definitely a bit harder because it was easier for other schools to get higher points so we had to play even better this year,” stated Hechevarria.

However, the season didn’t result in the way Coach Garcia hoped it would; “it’s probably not as successful, in the team aspect, as we would like it.”
