Breast Cancer Walk: Steps of Strength and Value
October is dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer, promoting screening and prevention, and educating the community on research and treatment advances. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, particularly among women, accounting for approximately 25% of all cancer cases globally. Extensive research is ongoing to better understand breast cancer and to develop more effective treatments and prevention strategies.
Throughout the month, organizations and events across the country support thos affected by breast cancer. In honor of survivors and those currently battling the illness, Ferguson organized a breast cancer walk, giving students the opportunity to “walk a mile in their shoes.”
At the event on Friday, October 18th, students and staff wore pink and black shirts reading, “Falcons Support the Fight,” as they walked along the track in a show of support and solidarity. Students enjoyed the items provided at the walk. Junior, Samantha Pereira shared, “The walk was great, and it felt good to support breast cancer awareness. I especially enjoyed the snacks and drinks they provided.”
Many participants joined the walk for deeply personal reasons. Sophomore Daniela Rico “What inspired me to join the walk was my mom. She had breast cancer, and I know it was a really tough time for her”, Sophomore, Daniela Rico explains.
Senior Gabriela Rodriguez added, “Doing this walk made me feel helpful and involved in the community. I was very glad to participate.” The event had a successful turnout, and many hope it will become an October tradition. It has inspired younger generations to educate themselves about cancer awareness and health screening and to spread this knowledge within their communities.
This month, let us all commit to learning more about breast cancer and doing our part to support everyone whose lives have been touched by the disease.
