What You Missed at the Golden Globes and Emmy Awards
The commencement of the 2023 writers strike marked a period of change. Many productions were greatly affected as activities halted in support of underpaid writers. With time seeming to stop in the industry, it left many individuals wondering; “will the industry ever recover and return to their normal ways?”
After months of protesting against the industry’s unfair wages and practices, the cessation of the strike has brought the beginning of a new chapter for the industry.
To recover from the lack of recognition of 2023 media releases, many well respected award shows such as the Golden Globes and the Emmy’s have been hosted this past month.
On January 7, 2024, the 81st Golden Globe Awards honored the best in film and American television productions of 2023. This year’s ceremony was hosted by controversial comedian Jo Koy. The Globes saw their highest-ever ratings during the ceremony and was aired live on CBS, streamed live on Paramount+, and available on the CBS app.
This was the first Golden Globes since the award presentation was previously run by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which was disbanded due to several scandals. Dick Clark Productions, which had long co-produced the program with the HFPA, purchased the Golden Globes assets.
The Christopher Nolan film, Oppenheimer, won five Golden Globes on Sunday night, including best picture (drama), best director, best actor, best supporting actor, and best original score.
With nine nominations, including the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award and Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie leads the field.
Not only did the television series Succession and The Crown earn nominations for Best Television Series – Drama, but their lead actors also did.
