The Internet Sensation of Film: Minions: The Rise of Gru

Making the fourth entry in the Despicable Me franchise, Universal Pictures releases Minions: The Rise of Gru. After two years’ worth of delay, it was announced to be released on July 1, 2022, in IMAX theaters. The movie was one of the most anticipated films of 2022. Our two-year withhold due to the COVID-19 pandemic has finally ended.

Minions: The Rise of Gru received a 71% of Rotten Tomatoes, also raking in over $700  million at the global box office. Before my encounter with this movie I had my expectations set,  and I’m confident to say they were met. The movie had very fun features of not only Jack Antonoff’s produced soundtrack, but new characters introduced such as “The Vicious 6”. Played by an amazing selection consisting of Jean-Claude Van Damme, Taraji P. Henson, Alan Arkin, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, and Lucy Lawless.

The movie’s comedic approach was worth watching in theaters. It had the audience in an uplifting mood constantly laughing at the witty humor. As well as the trends that came along with the experience, mostly had teenagers wearing a suit and tie like it was a restricted dress code, formerly known as “gentleminions”. The irony within is why this trend overflows, carrying a  very Reservoir Dogs look to a children’s movie. However, I believe this trend has no doubt led  to unironic enjoyment too, and a nostalgic reliving of childhood pleasures.

Since it is the sequel to the spin-off prequel minions (2015) The setting takes place in  1970s San Francisco. The plot consists of young preteen Gru attempting to join a group of  supervillains called the Vicious 6 after they oust their leader; Wild Knuckles. When Gru’s  attempt turns disastrous, Gru and his Minions go on the run with the Vicious 6 hot on their tails.

Fanatics are already for, yet another addition to the franchise. They’ve already been brainstorming on a potential sequel to The Rise of Gru. They speculate that if the Minions were presented with a more powerful potential master, would they betray Gru? Considering it’s happened with previous masters.

This fun, lighthearted children’s film is very humorous and enjoyable for anyone. Certainly the  experience is worth it to those who enjoy something simple, funny and just overall charismatic. I loved its spontaneity and even the retro-feel it brought to screen. It’s available on most streaming devices as of now but I would personally recommend watching it in theater for an utmost  experience.
