Hispanic Heritage Month Kicks Off with a Ferguson Celebration

Ferguson hosted its yearly Hispanic Heritage Assembly on October 20th. It had beautiful performances from our fusion dancers, our theater classes, and many musical shows.

In between the acts, Jocelyn Sanchez and John Diaz showed a PowerPoint presentation about numerous Hispanic countries. The presentation displayed the culture of each country along with some fun facts. Throughout the presentation, the audience cheered for their home countries as they were shown on screen.

The fusion dancers started off the show with their amazing production, followed by solo songs from some of our talented singers. The theater students put on an excellent display of Blackout from the play In the Heights. The assembly was a creative and entertaining way to educate people on other cultures as well as bring them together.

“I’ve always enjoyed performing. I love the thrill of being onstage and the feedback we get back from the audiences,” said actor Valeria Munoz.

The Salsa club had beautiful acts ready with songs the audience was able to sing back to them as they performed.

“There is no better feeling like being able to feel the energy from the crowd. Coming off stage is also an amazing feeling knowing that you left it all out there and realizing how beautiful that was,” shared Emily Rodriguez.

Let’s not forget about the amazing solo artists and smaller groups of people and their elegant acts of music.

“I loved every second of it. I love Helenita Vargas, the singer of the song I sang at the concert, and I just thought it was an amazing song for an amazing moment,” commented senior Ray Negrette.

The beautiful thing about the Hispanic Heritage show is that it is a delightful way for students to reconnect with their culture or learn a new one. Living in America, it can be hard to express your pride of where you are from, and having these opportunities of listening to songs from your country and seeing others celebrate their pride as well is great to see.
