The Golden Globes celebrated their 76th anniversary on Sunday, January 6th and the night was glamourous and emotional, filled with awards being won and history being made.

Actors Andy Samberg of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Sandra Oh of Killing Eve hosted the event of the evening and opened with the traditional comedic monologue. Comedic as it may have been, the monologue was filled with jokes highlighting the many aspects and controversies of the Hollywood industry, while also poking fun at the actors and actresses present.

The night progressed with awards being handed out, the first (Best Actor in a Television Series— Musical or Comedy) being presented by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper of A Star Is Born. Michael Douglas took home that award for his role in The Kominski Method. Other notable awards of the night for television included The Americans’ win for Best Drama TV Series, and Sandra Oh’s win of Best Actress in a Drama TV Series for her role in Killing Eve.

In another big addition to the television category, the Carol Brunette Award was introduced this year. This award, named after comedic actress Carol Brunette (who was there to accept the first annual award in her name, introduced by Steve Carell), highlights an actor or actresses’ lifetime of excellence in television. That same night, the Cecil B. DeMille award (for excellence and lifetime achievements in film) was presented by Chris Pine to legendary actor Jeff Bridges.

Film had a big night as well, especially Green Book which took home the most Globes, including Best Motion Picture– Musical or Comedy. Bohemian Rhapsody won two of the most coveted Golden Globes of the night: Best Motion Picture– Drama, and whose lead actor, Rami Malek, took home Best Actor in a Motion Picture– Drama. Roma, a foreign film released by Netflix and written/ directed by Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón, also took home two Golden Globes in a very proud moment for Latinos everywhere. In his memorable acceptance speech, Cuarón said that this film, which follows an indigenous family during the Mexican revolution, helps people understand “exactly how much we have in common.”

This year’s Golden Globes were memorable to say the least and brought great films and television shows into the spotlight and awarded them for their impact on Hollywood culture and the viewers at home and in theatres.
