FHSAA to Consider Sanctioning E-Sports

E-sports, also known as electronic sports, has experienced a remarkable surge in popularity in recent years. What originally started as an underground subculture has rapidly evolved into a multi-million dollar industry, providing lucrative opportunities for individuals across the globe.

This growth is primarily fueled by the emergence of numerous e-sports teams competing in high-stakes tournaments for cash prizes. In addition to the prize money earned by winning competitions, e-sports has also gained significant traction as a globally televised sport, accumulating an industry worth over 1.4 billion dollars.

The influence of e-sports has extended to educational institutions, with over 170 colleges in the United States welcoming e-sports teams and more than 5,000 student-athletes actively participating. Established institutions such as Boise State, Ohio State, Drexel, Columbia, and many others have embraced esports as a legitimate and competitive platform for students.

The Florida High School Athletic Association, known better as the FHSAA, has taken note of the increasing popularity of e-sports and is considering sanctioning these events in high schools in Florida. John A. Ferguson Senior High has yet to implement e-sports into their school, nor have they considered it. Despite this, many students have been advocating for e-sports, highlighting its potential benefits.

“I believe Ferguson should consider e-sports. It’s a terrific opportunity for students to work towards something and can be a great learning experience,” mentions Caleb Disotaur, a sophomore. “It would be a great opportunity for kids to profit off their skill and put money towards their family and college.”

At this moment, students are eagerly awaiting the decision from the FHSAA regarding the potential inclusion of e-sports in high school sports programs throughout Florida.
