As the summer approaches, our backs slowly recline and our feet kick off their shoes in preparation for a relaxing summer. In a month bombarded with testing, small movie breaks are the only solution. Here are your next comfort movies.
Thunderbolts (5/2)
The Thunderbolts movie, a Marvel Studios film, focuses on an unconventional team of antiheroes assembled by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. The cast includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. This movie is the next Marvel hit you won’t want to miss.
Last Bullet (5/7)
As the last installment of Netflix’s “Lost Bullet” trilogy series, ex-con and car genius Lino seeks justice for his mentor, Charas. He partners with Julia to hunt down Areski, who has returned to France and is being pursued by a corrupt commander. Lino aims to bring down the corrupt figures who destroyed his life and the lives of those he cares about, including his brother and mentor.
Juliet and Romeo (5/9)
This reimagining of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” is set in the 1301 Medieval era and is an original pop musical. The story follows the star-crossed lovers, who reveal the truth about the future of the empire and turn the tides of history. The film explores the history that inspired Shakespeare’s play, with Romeo and Juliet unveiling the truth about the empire’s future.
Friendship (5/9)
This comedy-drama stars Tim Robinson, Paul Rudd, Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer, and others. Suburban dad Craig falls hard for his charismatic new neighbor, as his attempts to form an adult male friendship threaten to ruin both of their lives. The film follows the intertwined lives of a group of friends as they navigate various relationships, challenges, and unexpected events.
Nonnas (5/9)
This Netflix film tells the story of a man who, grieving the loss of his mother, opens an Italian restaurant with a group of local grandmothers as chefs. Nonnas is based on the life of Joe Scaravella, the owner of Staten Island restaurant Enoteca Maria, where grandmothers (nonnas) are invited to work as chefs. The cast includes Vince Vaughn, Lorraine Bracco, Talia Shire, Brenda Vaccaro, Joe Manganiello, Drea de Matteo, Campbell Scott, Michael Rispoli, Linda Cardellini, and Susan Sarandon.
Jane Austen Wrecked my Life (5/16)
This movie follows Agathe, a single bookseller and aspiring writer, who finds herself drawn into a romantic entanglement while attending a Jane Austen writers’ residency. The film is a modern take on Jane Austen’s novels, exploring themes of love, ambition, and self-discovery. When she receives an invitation to a Jane Austen writers’ residency in England, she finds herself caught in a romantic triangle, as she’s torn between her friend Felix and a charming, albeit arrogant, new acquaintance named Oliver Lowe. The film explores Agathe’s journey to overcome her insecurities while pursuing her writing and romantic desires.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (5/23)
The film picks up where “Dead Reckoning Part One” left off, with Ethan and his team facing a dangerous foe from their past and racing against time to prevent the world from being forever altered by the Entity. The story involves tracking down the AI and destroying it before it falls into the wrong hands, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. The movie is expected to be a satisfying conclusion to the 30-year-long story arc of the Mission: Impossible franchise. The film will see Tom Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt, alongside familiar faces like Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Hayley Atwell.
Lilo & Stitch (5/23)
The movie follows Lilo, a young Native Hawaiian girl, and her sister Nani as they navigate life in Hawaii and find a unique companion in Stitch, an alien experiment who is later adopted as part of their “ohana” (family). The film also explores themes of family, friendship, and acceptance. The story is set in Hawaii, with the Pelekai family rebuilding their home with the help of David and Cobra Bubbles. Much like the original movie, 2025’s Lilo & Stitch follows Lilo Pelekai, a six-year-old Hawaiian girl who loves hula and surfing, and Stitch, a small, furry blue alien that results from genetic experiments conducted by a mad scientist named Dr. Jumba Jookiba.
Fountain of Youth (5/23)
The film centers on Luke and Charlotte, who, despite their strained relationship, join forces to find the mythical Fountain of Youth. Their quest involves following historical clues on a global adventure, with the potential to achieve immortality if they succeed. The film also features elements of a heist, with the siblings navigating a world of adventure and intrigue. The film stars John Krasinski and Natalie Portman, with Eiza González, Domhnall Gleeson, and Stanley Tucci also in the cast.
Fear Street: Prom Queen (5/23)
This American slasher film based on R.L. Stine’s novel “The Prom Queen” is set in 1988 and follows a group of high school students as they navigate the intense competition for prom queen, which turns deadly when a mysterious killer targets the candidates. The film stars India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Chris Klein, Ariana Greenblatt, Lili Taylor, and Katherine Waterston.
Karate Kid: Legends (5/30)
Starring Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio reprising their roles, along with Ben Wang as the new Karate Kid, Li Fong, Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley, and Ming-Na Wen; the story follows Li Fong, a kung fu prodigy, who is forced to move to New York City and finds himself involved in a karate competition after a family tragedy and unwanted attention from a local champion. Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso guide Li, merging karate and kung fu styles to prepare him for the showdown.
