Young People are Changing the Face of Fashion
Stores selling secondhand clothes and household goods have become increasingly popular with young people. These are thrift stores that sell donated items, unlike regular stores that sell new, mass-produced items. Thrift shops have lower prices than regular stores and often support charitable causes. Whereas regular stores have predictable inventory, thrift stores offer constantly changing products. While thrift stores give clothes and decorations a new life, regular stores are filled with the newest trends and organized to feed overconsumption. This adds more waste to the planet and depletes its natural resources. However, thrift stores solve these problems by reusing and recycling already used items.
It isn’t a surprise that younger generations are becoming so attracted to thrift stores. Take into account the many popular movements, like “VSCO girls,” that were made popular with young people. Many young people are taking it upon themselves to lessen the waste of clothes, furniture, and decorations that will end up in the trash by participating in shopping at thrift stores. Not only is it sustainable, but many consider older vintage items to be of higher quality, aligning with their fashion sense. The items are unique and thrilling to find, especially if they are vintage.
Thrift shopping has become a huge trend on Instagram and TikTok. With viral videos in a community now known as “ThriftTok,” people show how to upcycle thrifted items and show off their thrift hauls. Previously, thrift stores had a bad reputation, being seen as used and poor. With these trends, thrifting began to be rebranded as finding appealing vintage items. This trend grew as people aligned with the mission of lowering waste and the exhaustion of natural materials on Earth.
Thrifting helps people be creative with their outfits and find their individual style in a way modern retail clothes can’t help. While clothes and accessories from regular stores follow the newest, most popular trends, it leaves many styles out of the picture. In thrift stores, you can find clothes of different colors, textures, and patterns. Experimenting by layering and trying on alternative styles found at thrift stores helps you think outside of the box.
Thrifting is changing the future of shopping by shifting consumer behavior from excessive consumption of disposable fast fashion to a sustainable circular economy. It keeps old items out of landfills and extends their life cycle. It also lowers the demand for new manufacturing. This would lower the carbon emissions and water usage of the fashion industry. It raises standards, with buyers valuing quality over brand name.
By being budget-friendly, thrift stores are more accessible to a wider range of people who might not be able to afford regular store products. Some popular local thrift stores to get started and explore are Goodwill, Firefly Inn, Dragonfly Thrift Boutique, Fly Boutique, Szyn Thrift and Vintage, Lotus House Thrift Chic Boutique, Out of the Closet, Miami Twice, Sir Thrifty, Consign of the Times, Flamingo Plaza, The House of Findings, and the Salvation Army.
Taking a chance on thrifting can be a wonderful way to give back to your community and help the planet in small ways. Making a change one purchase at a time.
