Dear Incoming Freshmen: Here Are Some Things to Know For a Successful First Year

Middle school and high school are two completely different worlds. Transitioning from one to the next can be a challenging task, but only if you are up to it. I remember it was not too long ago when I wasn’t sure if I was ready to move on to the next chapter of my life. Nevertheless, high school has definitely brought out the best in me. Everyday I am finding something new about myself that helps me become the best person I can be. I can tell you with full confidence that no matter what obstacles you may face, it will help you for the better. Below I have some handy tips that will surely give you a leg up.

  1.     Come in ready to meet different kinds of people with unique personalities.

Coming into Ferguson, one of the first things I realized was how much diversity we had. I saw students with distinct cultures, beliefs, skills, and personalities come together. Here in John A. Ferguson we have a huge student body, therefore be prepared to face different types of people who have different opinions.

  1.     Be sure to take your Freshman year seriously.

I could not stress this one enough. Freshman year really sets the tone for your next three years. Many people could tell you from experience that slacking your first year in high school is not something to be taken lightly. I really regret not pushing myself and failing to set high, but attainable goals. Doing well on your first year could really boost your GPA and increase your confidence. Just be sure to heed my advice and have determination from the beginning.

  1.     Do NOT run to class.

Not only is this a safety precaution but it may save you from future ridicule. There is nothing more obnoxious than a freshman bumping into you in the hallway. Even if you are risking being late to class, running is not an option. Throughout the year you will learn all the different types of passageways that will get you where you want the quickest.

  1.     Respect your teachers.

Maybe in middle school you got away with talking back to your teachers. However, to your dismay high school teachers do not mess around. Nobody wants to deal with a student who has not yet matured. I personally have witnessed many of my classmates attempt and fail to outwit our teachers. So, when you assume that you are some big hot shot, humble yourself and remember that your teachers have dealt with kids like you before.

  1.     Get involved and stay involved.

It is important in your freshman year to get involved with the many extracurricular activities that the school offers. Believe it or not, doing this can really put you ahead. Begin looking for clubs that interest you, sports that you would love to play, and other activities related to school that you think will better you as a person. For instance, in my freshman year I joined volleyball, soccer, biotechnology, and student government. I’m so happy that I did because I ended up learning so much and made countless friendships. Don’t be that person that doesn’t do anything in high school.

  1.     Write down your homework no matter what.

Even if your homework is no homework, always write it down. Just jotting down a simple note may help you stay organized. Keeping track of what you have to get done is necessary if you want to succeed in high school.

  1.     Do your best to stay AWAY from drama.

It seems like drama is always following you wherever you go. Nevertheless, beware! Drama is extremely distracting and pointless. It can take away your attention from more important things. Remember that 99% of the friends you make in high school won’t matter in a few years. Don’t waste your time dealing with the immaturity of silly situations.
