Fresh N’ Up Warmly Welcomes New Students

Fresh N’ Up is a vibrant and influential club at John A. Ferguson Senior High School, and it is sponsored by Rosana Melau, an enthusiastic physical science teacher. “You’ll never walk alone” being the club’s slogan, it demonstrates its purpose of aiding in acclimating incoming freshmen to our high school. Not only does it show the bond between all members of the club, but it also serves as the club’s pledge to make sure no freshman is ever left alone on their path in high school.

Fresh N’ Up is a completely student-run organization that helps freshmen adjust to the new atmosphere. Ms. Melau adds, “We are all about making freshman year as enjoyable as possible! We host activities and resources throughout the year, targeting freshmen’s most common worries. We give underclassmen mentors and hold weekly meetings for the students to come and get help with anything they need.”

One effort the club makes is setting up Schoology groups where the young Falcons can ask questions and upperclassmen can answer them. During the lunch periods, activities are provided by the club to help form a bond between fellow classmates. With many freshmen taking part in candy giveaways and photo booths. It not only helps unify the students and make new friends amongst themselves but also allows the freshman class to be more comfortable with each other.

Lissy Lahera, the club president explains, “They seem to help freshmen feel included, which is what Fresh N’ Up is for.” The club participates in several important events throughout the year. These events include Fright Night, Open House, and Freshman Orientation. Students can meet others in their grade while learning about school traditions and the halls they will soon call home for four years.

Fresh N’ Up was established in 2018 by a group of students who observed that freshmen in high schools often felt excluded, as there were limited opportunities for them to get involved in activities. During their sophomore year, many students felt that something needed to be done about this issue. They decided to establish a club that would cater to the needs of future high schoolers. The club aimed to provide a platform for incoming students to access information, ask questions, and connect with new people.

Fresh N’ Up has grown and evolved since it first began six years ago. Today, it is comprised of forty members who are all eager to help. Dayanna Sevilla, a club member in the 10th grade shares her experience, “I feel like joining this club has helped me connect with more people and feel like I am genuinely contributing to the school.”

Fresh N’ Up has been so successful throughout the years and continues to grow because of its amazing members and sponsors. Everyone is so supportive of this club, as we all want to ensure that every incoming freshman at John A. Ferguson Senior High is welcomed and feels valued.

What distinguishes Fresh N’ Up as an organization within the school is its commitment to its motto and mission. It truly demonstrates the impact that student-led initiatives can have in creating a more cohesive and supportive learning environment.
