Sonic 3 Speeds to the Box Office

Speed to your local theatre and enjoy the cinematic masterpiece that is Sonic 3. Following its release on December 20, 2024, the film has amassed a flood of excitement and positive reviews, and I am here to tell you, it is all deserved. If you have not watched the first and second movies, do not worry as they are unneeded to understand the resplendent animation and exuberant writing Sonic 3 has blessed us with. It may be an over exaggeration to some, but this series is successful for a reason–with each new installment, the films progress.

In Sonic 2, Knuckles and Dr.Eggman battle Sonic and Tails in search of the Chaos Emerald. Sonic 3, however, brings Shadow, Maria, and Dr. Gerald Robotnik–and if you stay to watch all the end credits, Amy and Metal Sonic. After escaping G.U.N’s custody, he is set on avenging his first and only friend, a young blonde girl named Maria.

Long-time fans have mixed opinions on the erasure of Maria’s terminal sickness in Sonic 3 because Shadow’s purpose was to cure her, and when he cannot, she passes away. Maria’s memory and the lack of time they spent together haunt him deeply. With her death, he lost his livelihood–and his sister.

Rather than highlighting useless characters and relationships like most films, the inclusion of close relationships in Sonic 3 are not simply checkboxes to satisfy emotional fans, but are intentional and apply to the film. This is why this movie has captivated countless audiences and has been set apart from many other formula films.

The biggest highlight of this film is the final fight between Sonic and Shadow. There is not enough praise given for the animation and visuals the movie presented. For people who sat in the theater and watched them ping pong around earth in flashes of color, enjoyment reached its peak and eyes were heavily graced.

Aside from this film’s excellence, its ranking is slightly dropped by its lacking comedy. Despite the movie’s intended audience being children, there is always an underlying awareness of adult viewers taken into consideration that was missing in Sonic 3. The jokes are too childish and can be cheesy at times, but some humorous comments were truly funny.

With angst, comedy, love, family, and Shadow the Hedgehog, there is no reason to not watch Sonic 3. This movie reached the hearts of many and it suits every occasion and every kind of person. This is not a movie you want to skip out on.
