Weapons: Fear Unleashed

Weapons was released on August 8, 2025, directed by Zach Cregger, who also helmed the acclaimed horror film Barbarian. Unsurprisingly, similar to Barbarian’s 92% Rotten Tomatoes score, Weapons holds a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Not only does it explore horror, but it also includes well-timed comedy that never detracts from the movie’s intensity. Despite its $38 million budget, the film earned $43.5 million during its opening weekend, already recouping its production costs. It has since grossed over $250 million worldwide.

At first glance, it seems to quickly address the central problem: what happened to the students? However, the story pulls you in with its chapter-like structure, which isn’t strictly linear and shifts between different characters’ perspectives by jumping back and forth in time. It reveals different viewpoints and explores the lives and struggles of every main character. The film immerses viewers by involving them in solving the mystery alongside the characters. You’re kept on edge whenever the characters are close to uncovering another clue. Still, if you have a high tolerance for horror, many of the jump scares won’t startle you. For viewers who are more sensitive, the film’s gore can be quite shocking and detailed, but the camera doesn’t always focus directly on it.

The story revolves around a particular class where all students, except one, went missing. They were caught on CCTV leaving together at 2:17. This immediately sparks chaos in the community, and we see how this event impacts the characters’ lives. The film presents the perspectives of six characters, ending with the most important one who reveals the truth from the very beginning. All these elements lead up to the final confrontation, where they locate the missing students. Using the antagonists’ abilities against them, the characters send the students after the villain, leading to a gory showdown with a surprising touch of comedy.

Watching the film twice is highly recommended after understanding the symbolism and deeper meanings behind each character. A recurring symbol throughout the movie, especially in the credits, is a triangle. This symbol references Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), an organization where those struggling with alcohol addiction seek recovery. The upside-down triangle is also seen on the bell used by the antagonist, symbolizing relapse into addiction.

The clever title of the movie references the many “weapons” used in grief—not physical weapons, but mental habits. The teacher, Ms. Gandy, is being blamed and hunted by the parents of the missing students. She turns to alcohol, drowning in “self-pity,’ and decides to investigate herself. Her unresolved grief leads to self-sabotage. One of the fathers of the missing kids, Archer, suspects Ms. Gandy and conducts his own investigation. However, his investigation is selfish, focusing solely on his own child and marked by violent outbursts. His grief, full of rage, isolates him. These are just a couple of examples of the symbolic elements in the film. It’s worthwhile to explore all these references and their hidden meanings before watching again.

Many reviewers regard Weapons as Zach Cregger’s best work yet. They describe it as “a thrilling ride” or “a memorable experience.” Some critics, however, mention that the tension feels lacking or that the storyline can be confusing. The tension makes the film feel more like a thriller than a horror, but it’s still well-crafted, with the director’s vision clearly reflected in the characters. Cregger created Weapons while going through a tough period in his life—his friend recently died from an alcohol-related accident, and his father had struggled with alcohol addiction. Cregger himself has dealt with addiction and is in recovery. His personal experiences are deeply woven into the story, conveyed through every character and scene.
