Graduation: New Beginnings Await
The long-awaited time of year is coming up in just about a month and a half. However,
the ending of school that comes on June 4th isn’t the only exciting event coming up,
especially for seniors. On May 27, 2026, the seniors will have their graduation
ceremony and receive their diplomas, marking the end and beginning of a new era in
their lives.
After 4 years in high school, and many more counting middle and elementary
school, it is undeniable that everyone was changed and shaped by their experiences.
Friendships gained and lost, teachers and their impact , some silly conflicts that you will not remember in a year from now. It is part of life to experience it all. For it to shape you into who you are today. Now as graduation is coming in one month in Watsco Center, it is both exciting and terrifying to think of going into a new mature stage of life. Likewise, graduation ceremonies are packed with that symbolism of growing up.
Graduation ceremonies are rites of passages that mark a student’s transition to their
next stage in life. Everything, even down to the attire, is part of the tradition. The cap
and gown worn at these events date back to medieval Europe and signify academic
achievement. An important part of the ceremony that many students count down to is
moving the tassel from the right to the left side of their cap to show they have now
graduated. Another classic tradition is to have students walk across the stage, shaking
hands with school officials, and receiving their diploma. A commencement address is
always done with a respected guest, alumni, or valedictorian giving a speech to the
graduating class. Leading up to graduation, senior-specific events are done. Last week,
it was Senior Spirit Week, and the last pep rally was done shouting out the leaving
seniors. Other traditions and rituals are done personally and not by the institution, like
how many families go to eat dinner somewhere nice to celebrate while others host
parties. Often, gifts are given by friends and family too. Students like to decorate their
cars with their school colors and graduating class numbers too.
An exciting time arriving to send students off to their next chapter, whether that’s a job, a
gap year, or college. It is celebrated through cheers and pictures. A nerve-wracking but
unforgettable experience to lead you to adulthood. Make the most of your time left here
and leave with no regrets!
