Insurrection at Capitol Building Shocks the Nation

The events that occurred on January 6th will live in infamy. Tensions were already high as it was exactly 2 weeks prior to president-elect Joe Biden’s official inauguration into office and with it being the day that the president-elect was declared the definitive winner of the election, following a joint session made in Congress.

Even with this scene set, and Georgia’s reelections concluding only a few days before, it is safe to say the general public did not expect how extreme the reaction would be to President Trump’s loss.

While the aforementioned joint session was still in session, a ruthless mob of Trump supporters stormed the building at around 1 p.m., invoking violence on property and security in an attempt to restrain them.

It should be noted that United States citizens reserve the right to stand in front of the Capitol building with the intention to peacefully protest on those grounds, which may explain the viral footage of Capitol building security opening the gates for the rally. However, the moment they set foot in the building and their actions shifted to being violent, it became classified as a terrorist act.

By far the most asked question after the fact was how this all came about: how did an outburst of thousands manage to be executed that well?

Many have pointed out a social media app named Parler, which was pitched as a “free speech” alternative to Facebook and Twitter with a significant amount of its user base being Donald Trump supporters, conservatives, conspiracy theorists, and right-wing extremists. The app has been rapidly growing in popularity, especially with mainstream social media platforms cracking down on posts that spread misinformation and incite violence. Essentially going unchecked on this app, it was said that the main planning of this riot occurred there, with videos and messages being leaked later in the week being used as evidence.

As for the aftermath, President Trump was accused of performing seditious actions at the height of animosity in the voting fraud controversy, therefore being the one that instigated this uproar. Exactly a week later on the 13th, he was impeached once again, being the only president in American history to be impeached twice in his term.

Even though he was impeached with only one week left in his time as president, if he is found guilty, and incriminated, he will not be allowed to run for public office ever again, which is something he has hinted at for 2024, with all his executive privileges such as his stipend and access to secret service also being taken away from him.

Following these accusations of the president, all social media platforms, even the ones that he is notorious on such as Twitter, temporarily or even permanently banned him.

However, if Trump is not convicted in the Senate, he still has more investigations to face. States such as New York and Georgia are looking at potential voting controversies with the Trump administration.

In his inauguration speech, President Joe Biden stressed the need for unity, and we can only hope that an event of the magnitude of what happened at the Capitol building earlier this month never occurs again.
