Where are our Falcons soaring off to next?
As senior year begins to wind down, students at Ferguson are finalizing one of the biggest decisions of their high school careers: where they will be spending the next four years. For many Falcons, the next chapter will remain within the Sunshine State, with students committing to a wide range of Florida colleges and universities that offer various opportunities, campus lifestyles, and academic programs. However, not everyone is staying close to home—some students are heading out of state to attend universities across the country, seeking new experiences, colder weather, and specialized programs that align with their goals.
Miami Dade College (MDC) continues to be a strong choice for many Ferguson students who are looking for flexibility, affordability, and a clear path toward their career aspirations. With multiple campuses throughout the city and programs designed to support both full-time and part-time students, MDC provides an accessible start to higher education. For many, MDC also serves as a stepping stone toward transferring to a four-year university, making it a practical and strategic choice for students looking to save money while still receiving a quality education.
“I chose to attend MDC to major in health science, so with the exceptional support of MDC, I can achieve my goal of becoming a physician assistant.” (Elkin Corzo, Grade 12)
Florida International University (FIU) remains one of the most popular destinations for Ferguson seniors. With its main campus just a short drive from school, FIU offers students the opportunity to stay close to home while earning a degree from one of Florida’s top public universities. The school is especially known for its strong programs in business, computer science, engineering, and health sciences. For seniors like Yariel Gallardo, FIU was the obvious choice.
“I chose FIU because it was the best option for what I want to do, and I feel good about choosing them because they’re a well-known school.” (Gallardo, Grade 12).
The University of Miami (UM) is a popular option for Ferguson seniors who seek a private school experience while remaining in Miami. Known for its exceptional programs in health sciences, communications, and business, UM offers top-tier academics, small class sizes, and a beautiful campus in Coral Gables. Although tuition is higher than that of public universities, many students are attracted to the school’s strong support systems, research opportunities, and vibrant student life. For those in pursuit of a personalized and challenging college experience close to home, UM continues to stand out.
While many Ferguson seniors are staying in Florida, a few are venturing far from home to pursue their dreams. Donovan Gomez is one such student, choosing to attend Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts—a school nationally recognized for its arts and communication programs. For Donovan, the decision wasn’t easy, but it was made with purpose and ambition.
“I chose Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts because of its potential to bring me great success in the world of creative writing. The tuition fees are high, and moving so far from home is pretty daunting, but with a hefty scholarship and some courage, I know this is the place that’ll bring me the furthest in my career.” (Enzo Gomez, Grade 12)
The University of Florida (UF) remains one of the most competitive and sought-after choices for Ferguson seniors. Located in Gainesville, UF offers rigorous academics, a spirited campus life, and top-ranked programs in fields like engineering, marketing, and business. Its strong reputation and vibrant college town atmosphere make it an ideal destination for students seeking both academic excellence and a genuine university experience.
“I like space, which is, of course, haunted by the unknown. I’d like to think of myself as someone venturing to UF in search of my dream. I’m infinitely grateful that I was accepted and plan to make the most of it!” (Dominic Hung, Grade 12)
As graduation approaches, the Class of 2025 is preparing to take its first steps beyond high school. Whether staying in Florida or heading to a new state, each senior’s college decision reflects their unique goals, passions, and dreams for the future. Some are choosing large universities for the full campus experience, while others are opting for local colleges that offer strong support and a direct path to their careers. From creative fields to science and healthcare, Ferguson seniors are getting ready to embark on a wide range of academic journeys. With excitement, determination, and a hint of nerves, they are stepping into a new chapter of their lives. Wherever they land, one thing is certain—they will always carry a piece of Ferguson with them.
