A Super Bowl Packed with Latin Pride, Drama, and Debate
What began the Super Bowl was Green Day, an American Punk Rock Band, as they hit it off with some of their popular songs, “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” “Holiday,” leading to “Boulevard of Broken Green Day, the iconic American punk rock band, kicked off the great American game with some of their most popular songs: “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” “Holiday,” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” building up to the most anticipated anthem of the night, “American Idiot.” After their electrifying set, a series of powerful performances followed before kickoff. Brandi Carlile delivered a heartfelt rendition of “America the Beautiful,” Charlie Puth sang the National Anthem, and Coco Jones performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often referred to as the Black National Anthem. After these awe-inspiring moments, Jon Bon Jovi introduced the New England Patriots, while Chris Pratt introduced the Seattle Seahawks, the two teams facing off in this year’s big game.
After a highly competitive matchup, the Seattle Seahawks came out on top. Both cheers and complaints erupted from viewers in the stadium and online. Many praised the quality of play and standout performances from key players. Others were disappointed, calling it one of the most boring Super Bowls in history due to the consistent point gap throughout the game. Critics also highlighted the Patriots’ surprising inability to score, especially given their reputation as a dominant franchise. Some frustrated fans even went so far as to claim the game was rigged.
The halftime show, however, was widely regarded as a major highlight. Headlined by Bad Bunny, the performance featured a medley of his biggest hits, including:
• “Tití Me Preguntó”
• “Yo Perreo Sola”
• “Safaera”
• “MONACO”
• “El Apagón”
• “VOY A LLEVARTE PA PR”
• “EoO”
• “BAILE INOLVIDABLE”
• “NUEVA YOL”
• “CAFÉ CON RON”
• “DtMF”
Joining him on stage, Lady Gaga performed a salsa rendition of “Die With a Smile,” and Ricky Martin energized the crowd with “Lo Que Le Pasó a Hawaii.” The show created a massive buzz throughout the Latin American community, especially during the moment when Bad Bunny began naming countries across the Americas as dancers waved their flags in a sea of color.
Many other celebrities appeared during the show, including Cardi B, Karol G, Young Miko, Jessica Alba, Pedro Pascal, Jenna Ortega, and Dave Grutman, leaving fans eagerly hoping they would join in to sing. The halftime show drew an average of 128.2 million viewers in the United States alone. It sparked celebrations in Latino households everywhere, filled with dancing, singing, and pride. Even those who didn’t understand the lyrics said the energy and vibes were more than enough to pull them into the celebration, though many later expressed a desire to better understand the songs’ meanings.
The commercials also kept audiences engaged during breaks. According to USA Today, the top two ranked ads were Budweiser’s “American Icons” and Lay’s “Last Harvest.” While many spots were lighthearted and packed with beloved celebrities, some viewers voiced concerns about the heavy promotion of AI, cryptocurrency, and cutting-edge technology, worrying about their growing influence on everyday life.
Off the field, one storyline that dominated social media was the rumored breakup between Stefon Diggs and Cardi B. After the Seahawks’ victory, Diggs was arrested on felony charges on the field, and Cardi B reportedly left the game early. The drama surrounding their relationship and the arrest added another layer of attention to the Super Bowl and the celebrities in attendance.
This year’s Super Bowl was a thrilling experience for many and a disappointment for others, but its influence and cultural impact are undeniable. With the recent trend of high-profile performances and dramatic storylines, excitement is already building for what next year’s Super Bowl will bring.
