The Falcon Standard: Ferguson’s Dedication to Student Success
For the past twenty-three years, John A. Ferguson Senior High has maintained its strong tradition of academic excellence. As a current student, I’ve come to appreciate just how much the school’s dedication to learning and achievement influences everything we do. With a wide variety of programs, clubs, and classes offered, not only is there something for everyone, but students are given the means to explore their passions, grow them, and excel.
From the moment kids enroll to when they walk across the stage wearing their cap and gown, faculty and teachers alike are dedicated to supporting them in every aspect of our educational path. Through a wide variety of resources, such as free tutoring services, dual enrollment opportunities, college-readiness workshops, and career-focused academics, Ferguson ensures that we, as students, receive the support we need to reach our full potential.
Moreover, the school is widely recognized for its exceptional graduation rate of 99.5%, especially considering it supports a student body of over four thousand. Apart from doing our part and putting in the time and effort over these years, the student counseling department plays a pivotal role in monitoring our progress, guiding us through their requirements, and ensuring we remain on track to graduate.
By empowering student success, many of our graduates have even attended prestigious universities such as Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Yale University, Duke University, and Princeton University. With our CAP advisor, Ms. Garcia, always on standby to answer questions and concerns regarding the application process and scholarship inquiries, she often promotes new opportunities and sends frequent emails to the senior class to ensure no one misses out on valuable information.
Above all else, Ferguson has made it a priority to dedicate itself to its students beyond the classroom and test scores. The school understands that true success begins with a safe learning environment—one in which all students feel heard, comfortable, and well-protected. To uphold this commitment, the administration continuously strives to enforce various safety protocols and maintain a secure campus.
In all my years as a Ferguson student, I’ve witnessed firsthand how seriously the school takes preparation and safety. Rather than simply talking about safety, we take it a step further and actively practice it through a number of consistent measures.
These include monthly emergency drills, often held at random times—even during lunch periods—to ensure everyone stays alert and prepared for any possible scenario. They also reinforce these efforts through a strict ID policy to monitor who actually belongs on school grounds, maintaining accountability amongst students and visitors, and upholding a closed-door policy in every classroom to maximize safety during the school day.
In addition, Ferguson regularly reviews and updates its safety procedures alongside providing on-site police officers, who remain on standby in case of emergencies. To further strengthen campus security, the school uses and promotes the Fortify FL app, a statewide reporting system that allows students and staff to quickly and anonymously report any suspicious activities or threats. Each and every report is always taken seriously and thoroughly investigated immediately by the administration and law enforcement.
Now that I’m a senior, I can truly recognize the lasting impact Ferguson has on every student who walks through its halls. The commitment to excellence, safety, and growth continues to define what makes this school stand out year after year. From academics to community spirit, our school has built a culture that encourages every student to aim high and achieve more. It remains a place where success is not only expected but substantially supported, and where every student has the opportunity to leave prepared for the future ahead.
